For this shoot Tim has asked me to be 2nd cameraman for the day.

My role as a 2nd cameraman was to get 'noddy's' of Jordan and Gregory, plus close ups of them when the main camera was on a wide. My role was also to get cut aways/cover shots, and any footage of graffiti so that the editor of the package has more content to use during post production. (168. Producing for tv and new media)

The equipment that i brought with me for the day was:

Sony A7S
Canon lenses:
50m f1.8 -
17-85 f4-5.6 - main lens because it's a zoom allowing me to go from a wide to close up
70-200 f4 -
ND grad filter - to reduce over exposed sky and bring back some of the clouds
Polarise filter - to reduce glare in shots



How the day went

Due to the weather being inconsistent on the day, it affected the exposure on some of my shots. Sometimes my shots would be correctly exposed, then the next second it would either be over exposed or under exposed, due to it being cloudy then sunny.



Because i was on support camera, i used my zoom lens throughout the day as this offered me a variety of adjustable focal lengths that i'd be able to quickly change to, from a wide to a close up, back to a wide.  (119. Television production Jim owns 2009)


The shot types that i filmed on the day was:

Single's: "A shot of one actor, in close-up, medium shot, or wide shot."


Establishing shot: "Also called the master shot, it establishes the scene and what's going on in it. It is a wider shot of the whole scene that shows its action, the actors' movements, and their relationship to each other. (168. Producing for TV and new media Cathrine Kellison 2005)

Conclusions

For today i feel it went well, the cutaways, close ups; singles and 'noddies' that i filmed should hopefully come in handy during post production for the editor. If i was to change something about today, it would be for us to further do a rece of our location again before the shoot based on the direction that the sun is falling, as sometimes the exposure was inconsistent due to the clouds covering the sun, another thing that i would use would be a shoulder rig to get more steadier shots - as it was very cold/windy at times and my hands were freezing causing me to shake the camera more than usual.

Where i'm head cameraman for the Domestic violence VT, i've been given the responsibility of sorting out all of the technical tasks such as figuring out how we're going to hide the cameras, and set them up so that we have sufficient coverage to cover the action.

After doing a rece around the studio and also based off of the treatment that was made for the VT, me and Danny experimented with using the iMacs in the base room to see the kind of coverage that they could get. 


Here's a digital story board / plan of how the set up will be:

Dslr camera will record the test subjects coming through the door

DSLR will be recording from inside the auditioning room filming test subjects walking past

The computers in base room 2 are going to be recording the base room via their webcams

This is going to be the sound/control room where the wireless cameras are going to be controlled from.

Inside board room 2 is where the action is going to take place, with the webcam on the iMac acting as a wide for the room, while the two hidden cameras record the action, with an additional two more people using their phones in portrait mode to record what's happening. 

A zoom recorder with wireless mic's is going to be attached underneath the desk to record the audio from inside base room 2

I contemplated using the computers instead of the iPad and android phone to stream the wireless GoPr's to however, when i streamed it to the mac i experienced a severe lag issue, plus the connection was not consistent and kept cutting out. 

Today while at the studio me and the director Danny Hewitt made a start on the 'Domestic violence' VT idea.

My Job role is the head cameraman for this VT, however, as I'm still free i've decided to contribute towards the planning of this as it's such a complex task given the restraints we have to work under.

Because of the nature of the VT, we were told that it must be done within a safe environment, so for this purpose we decided have the domestic violence stunt at the studios as this would be a controllable environment; not endangering any of our actors.


Here's the idea/ treatment

So that i had an idea on the sort of coverage that graffiti video get, i decided to scour the web and see what videos i could find to give myself and my group ideas/inspiration as to what type of shots we can get on our film day.


At the moment, where the content for the VT is still being sourced, and also the branding is still being established, these videos will be used primarly to give us lots of ideas to choose from, so that when it comes to executing our plan, we should hopefully have enough example videos to be able to construct a good VT.

From these videos hopefully we should be able to get some decent ideas from them such as: framing, lens selection, directing, and also different ways in which we could cover the Graffiti scene from both a legal side and also the illegal side, making our VT a more insightful but also impartial one.

So the job role that i was given for Helen Welsh's panel program called "WhatYouSaying?" is a Studio camera operator and also a VT package Camera man

What this job roles will require of me to do is assist my team in producing 4 prerecorded packages of the produces choice (The recorded insert - "occasionally, during a studio production, we may cut away from studio cameras' pictures to show prerecorded material." p.342 Tim Owens Gerald Millerson Television production) to insert into the show - also, to operate one of the four cameras within the studio during the live production, acting as a side camera to Sam Babington who's on the main establishing shot camera.

Even though this is my job role which does not have to be carried out until I'm required to do my job, because my role is minimal, I'm also going to help out where i can and do stuff i feel needs to get done on the producing aspect - where my other class mates may be busy carrying out their work placements or may need help towards completing their task.

Whilst researching about Cbeebies i've found a BTS section on their Youtube channel. The video's featured shows us the production process from script writing to set design, acting ect that these programmes go through in order to produce their shows. (Some of the videos featured do not relate to whether or not if the idea is viable, but mainly to look at the process and ideas behind the creation of these programmes)

So that i could get my brain ticking to try and come up with ideas for kids shows, i've been searching the internet/TV to see what type of studio produced children's programme exist, but more importantly, whilst searching for kids programmes I've been trying to find ones that would fit the unit's requirements; as in a one take live action performance, because the unit brief states that it has to be a 30 minute pilot show to be recorded live in the studios.


The channels that i checked out were:






Most of the children programmes that I found were prerecorded shows.
These prerecorded shows would have their sets built up - and cut scene to different locations around their set often including time skips, sometimes incorporating the use of green-screen and maybe recorded over the span of a few days. 
Other types of shows would include puppets, with the camera cropped to only show the puppet and actor in shot. Another type of show may be soley green screen produced.

Taking these things into account when i've been looking at these children's shows, i've been assessing ways in which i think it may be viable to produce similar programmes given the units requirements (LIVE SHOW)

When i was searching these channels, the type of children's programmes that particularly grabbed my attention was for kids aged 6 and under.

After TORTURING myself for hours watching kids shows, below is a short list of programmes i've found that i feel may help to give me ideas as to what type of viable show i can come up with; whilst abiding to the units requirements. (Some of the sets may be outside of our budget, however, its the concept/story behind the show that i'm mainly looking at)



























Aimed at pre-school children the shows teach and show children and read stories about their toys







Conclusion

Watching these shows has definitely helped to let me know what kids/toddlers shows exist out there at the moment and what is to be expected of these shows, but also what possible viable ideas i could come up with given the unit requirement.

Having checked out all of the channels for kids live action entertainment programmes (LAEP) on the list provided earlier, most of them provide mainly animation based programs as there main focus, if they featured any LAEP it was maybe the odd feature show in-between shows/adverts and was not their main focus, either that, or it was not viable enough for me to include it on the list. 

However, the one channel that dominated in providing a lot of viable LAEP was Ceebeebies, so for this reason i've decided to try and create a children's programme for Ceebeebies which would be viable enough to be produced for this unit.
