To get an idea on how i'd like our packaged presented, i've been looking at other news package examples to see how they've gone about producing their stories. As one of our stories is about technology and privacy infringement, i came across an interesting news package done by Fox news on the Facebook messenger app, in which a large portion of the package is mainly VOSOT, with the footage giving demonstrations of what the reporter is talking about.
In watching this package it's given me a lot of ideas on how my team could cover our iPhone U2 leaked album story. Because i was interested in this package, what i decided to do was to break down this package into a basic script/shot list form, just so that i can see if i have a general idea of what is happening in the news package, in regards to the shots used, how they're using them to add emotion/fear to the story, but also the techniques to deliver these shots in regards to how their helping to give meaning to the story.

News anchors introduce the main story, about the Facebook messenger app
He further introduces the story, setting up the intro for what his about to go into.
Cut to VOSOT - Computer being used, Screen record scene
A screen record of the google play store app download screen is being shown on a computer. as the reporter is talking about the app
Continuing VOSOT - Smart phone being used
ECU of phone, showing the FB messenger app being used on a smartphone device, just as the reporter says FB messenger can access your contacts
Continuing VOSOT -Computer being used, Screen record scene
WS Showing the terms of use for the FB app on google play store
Then cuts to a CU of the FB logo, zooming out to a WS of their website, showing FB’s reasoning for the permission to features on your device
Continuing VOSOT - Smart phone being used
ECU of phone, showing random use of the system notification settings, to further add to the story.
Then cuts to a CU of the phone being used then further crops out to a MCU of a random women using her smartphone.
The package then cuts again back to an ECU of the smartphone, showing the Camera icon next to the Facebook icon, to support what the news reporter is saying, as the shot gradually zooms in to the FB icon. (the underlying visual message in this technique bing used is made to seem as if FB is spying on you, because the Camera icon is placed next to the FB icon, and the shot gradually zooms in to the FB icon, as the reporter is talking about how having the FB app on your phone will allow FB to use your front and back camera to spy on you!)
The package then cuts again to a different ECU of the smartphone displaying the FB messenger app on the google play store (this time, instead of the computer showing google play store), browsing through the app description again. ( notice how the shot mainly emphasise on the App feedback which is a 1star, and then what would seem to be randomly browsing the App reviews, the "users" "randomly" stops on a bad review of the app.)
Continuing VOSOT - Cafe type environment
A male and female are seen in a cafe type environment talking with a laptop in front of them, as the presenters continue talking about the FB app.
Continuing VOSOT - Computer being used, Screen record scene
The package then cuts to a screen record of “Blaise DiPersia” Facebook page, scrolling down the page as the reporter is speaking
Continuing VOSOT - Montage of fast paced cutting of various ECU clips
Screen record, mouse used, keyboard used and random searches on the computer screen recording, with some extreme close up zooming used, kind of like a Edgar Wright close up montage.
Continuing VOSOT - Side shot MCU of laptop being used
The montage momentarily pauses as the reporter is speaking, then it continues, this time showing the montage of clips, but zooming in and out rapidly to add some kind of dramatical emotional feel to what the reporters are talking about.
Continuing VOSOT - Screen record
The package pauses again, this time on an ECU of the message icon on FB, then cuts to a WS of the Facebook logo onto of a blue screen.

VOSOT to Split screen then PTC
There is a voice over from the news anchors while we see the repeater, then the story cuts back to a split screen for a brief second so that the news anchors can Finnish talking, thanking the reporter for the package, then cutting back to a PTC of the reporter as the story draws to an end.
Overall feedback about this page
This package i feel was produced very well, i liked the fact that while the tech reporter was giving this package, he had a miniature common scenario situation unveiling on the screen, of the man and women in the cafe with their laptop, most likely discussing the FB messenger app, and the Guy showing the Lady about the app on his device, and also his FB page. This kind of makes the story seem as if it relates to everyone, where everyone could possibly relate to chilling out in a Cafe/Starbucks environment. Also the clothing they were wearing was casual too, which took the element of professionalism away from it, in contrast to what the reporter and news anchors are wearing.
But also i like how the package used certain shots at precise moments alongside with what is being said, to emphasise what is happening on screen, kind of like a visual language to connote how we should feel about our privacy being invaded by the FB app,
I also liked how, even tho they were using totally random shots in the montage, they did not seem to stand out as being out of place, and they kind of added a dramatical feel to the package.
Another thing what i like and i feel is very helpful as sort of a brief summary of what the package is about, is the Lower Third strap line that is constantly displaying what the story is about and the reporters name, so to anyone whom has tuned in late to the news package, they can sort of catch up and understand what the reporter is talking about, as the strap lines main heading constantly variates between the reporters name and a brief summary of the story that he's presenting. The minor heading on the strap line is displaying local news, and random updates plus tweets and twitter account names.
Good analysis here - think about how this could work for you - shooting relevant sequences carefully and thinking of appropriate 'stunts' is always a good start point for a package. They need to be creative pieces of work which have clear and concise information which the viewer is carefully led through by the visuals which support it.
