Recruiting people proved more of a challenge then we thought it would be, we got to Canterbury at 11.30, and was there until 2.30. In that space of time we only managed to interview 7 people.
When we arrived at Canterbury we parked next to the Town center, opposite the bus station.
We then went to McDonalds so that a some of the crew could get something to eat, and also for us to set up our equipment. Whilst me and Mark was sorting out the equipment, Andy and Roxanne was looking for convenient and potential spots to find and interview people at.
We first pitched up opposite a coffee shop at the opposite end of the hughstreet, but that spot didn't serve us too well as the people there was not too keen on being interviewed, so we relocated to the middle of the hughstreet, opposite the 02 mobile phone store.
While we was there, Roxanne and i spoke to many people whom had mixed opinions about the U2 album being on there iOS device's, however, they were not too interested in being interviewed because they claimed that they were camera shy, and did not want to be on camera, however, if it would of been Vox pops for a radio interview, then they would feel more comfortable.
Originally it was just Roxanne whom was approaching people asking for interviews, but because a lot of people was either not interested or shy, i also joined in whilst holding the camera. The reason i held the camera was so that the people whom i was approaching knew straight away what i was involved in, and also because it is a professional set up, they're likely to take me more serious and here what i have to say. Doing this proved a bit more successful on approaching and talking to people, but when it came to closing the deal, the public whom i asked still claimed that they're camera shy!
What made our task a HEAD JAR, was the fact that nearly everybody and there Puss and Dog had an iPhone out on display as they were walking up the high street! EVENTUALLY however, we managed to get people to interview!! some very passionate, and some very shy, but still helped out.
Here is our Mini photo diary of the Day provided by Andy.

For our shoot scheduled on friday, i booked out some equipment in order for us to carry out our Vox pops interviews.
The equipment that i booked out is:
Equipment list
- Zoom h4m decoder sound kit
- Headphones
- Rhode Directional Mic
- Deadcat Windshield
- Camera Rain cover
- Sony pmw 100
- Headphone
- Rhode mini Mic
- Deadcat Windshield
- Tripod
- LED light
The reason i booked out the Zoom H4m is just to have an extra audio track back up alongside the PMW100's audio
I took my LED light along with me just incase if any of the locations were over exposed and i needed to turn down my exposure levels. With the led it would light up the foreground/interviewee whilst the background would be darker.

We had a catch up last week just to see how we was getting in towards our project and what needs to be done. This time the meeting was more structured, and we know what is left to be carried out.

We're working collaboratively on the script using google documents, Roxanne and Mark started off on notes for the script for our first story about the U2 album, just to get the ball rolling, then myself and Andy have also contributed towards the script.
Roxanne and Mark initially started the script, and i then went over and viewed the script just amending what she had wrote, creating a second draft of the script, however, the script is still in working process; as even tho we're creating the script.

Because in our news package we may get Vox pops from the general public, i done some research into how to go about getting Vox Pops, here's the research results below.
Whilst doing the research however, unfortunately, the books that i took our from the library does not mention anything about Vox Pops, however, because a Vox pop is classed as a type of interview, the books i've taken out cover a lot on interviewing techniques, most of which apply to a Vox Pop.
What is a Vox Pop?
(Taken from media college)
The term "vox pop" comes from the Latin phrase vox populi, meaning "voice of the people". The vox pop is a tool used in many forms of media to provide a snapshot of public opinion. Random subjects are asked to give their views on a particular topic and their responses are presented to the viewer/reader as a reflection of popular opinion.
For video and television vox pops, the interviewer approaches people "in the street" and asks them simple questions about the topic. These people will be new to interviews and will often be nervous, flustered, giggly, etc. It's therefore important to make them feel comfortable and relaxed.
When asking people to participate, fast is best - don't give them time to worry about how they look or what their friends will think. Use a short, sharp standard question such as "Would you mind answering a couple of quick questions about genetically modified food for TV3 news tonight?". (Note: Everyone will want to know what channel you're with and when the programme will be broadcast, so it helps to get that out of the way quickly.)
As always, ask open-ended questions and avoid leading questions. At the same time, you must be specific enough to obtain brief answers.
Camera shots are usually framed as an MCU or close up. It's important to think about the guest's looking direction, and get an equal number of left-facing and right-facing subjects. These can then be alternated in post-production. Some producers go so far as to get all answers with a particular opinion facing one way, and answers with an opposing opinion facing the other way. Whether or not you think this is effective is up to you — you may feel that it is too contrived.
It pays to ensure that an accurate mix of genders and races are represented, appropriate to the population being surveyed.(www.mediacollege.com/video/interviews/voxpops.html)Following up on the opened-ended questions, a page taken from the video journalism multimedia storytelling book by Kenneth Kobre has a good explanation and example of what is a closed-ended and opened-ended question.

Some other useful information that i took out from this book that also relates to Vox Pops is...

This is important because the whole reason your getting a Vox pop, is to get that personal emotional opinion from your interviewee about their experience with the specific subject matter i.e. on a wild dog roaming around the streets.
These last two captioned pictures are just additional advice in regards to framing your interview, and also the do's and don'ts of interviewing.

Whilst researching, i found some very interesting information from a lot of primary resources. Here's the results that i came up with.
Who are U2?
U2 are an Irish rock band from Dublin. Formed in 1976, the group consists of Bono ( Lead vocals and guitar), The Edge(guitar, keyboards, and vocals), Adam Clayton (bass guitar), and Larry Mullen, Jr. (drums and percussion)
What is the name of the album that was given out for free?
Songs of innocence, an album comprised of 11 tracks.

What is the Apple iPhone 6?
The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are iOS smartphones developed by Apple Inc. The devices are part of the iPhone series, and were released on September 19, 2014 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhone_6)
The iPhone® name has been used for a number of products, but is best known as thesmartphone line released in 2007 by Cupertino, California-based Apple Inc. (http://www.wisegeek.org/what-is-an-iphone.htm)
The iPhone is a mobile phone with Wi-Fi made by Apple Inc. It does many things that a computer can do, but is small enough to fit in someone's hand. It is a mobile smartphone, meaning that it makes calls without wires. It can access theInternet as well. Like an iPod, it plays music and videos that have been put on it from a big computer, which is called syncing. It also has a calendar and camera, and can send text messages. People use the iPhone by touching the screen with a finger or two. This is done by tapping, dragging, and even typing on a keyboard shown on the screen. (http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhone)
When and where did this even take place?
September 9th at Flint Center for the Performing Arts in Cupertino, 4th Floor, 21250 Stevens Creek Blvd, Cupertino, CA 95014, United States
Why was the album given out for 'free'?
| Apple CEO Tim Cook, left, greets Bono from the band U2 after they preformed at the end of the Apple event on Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2014, in Cupertino, Calif.Marcio Jose Sanchez—AP |
- To promote their tour for 2015, as they're going to be performing tracks from the album
- As a gift to celebrate the ten year anniversary of their iPod commercial
- To promote the release of the iPhone 6 and iWatch
- Because apple paid U2
"U2 fans rejoice – the band will hit the road in 2015 in support of their new album Songs of Innocence. "
“Only if the songs are great can you bear leaving home. We all have families and mates and... so you know, you're looking for 11 great reasons to leave home and I think we've got them." (http://www.irishcentral.com/news/irishvoice/U2-are-ready-for-their-2015-Songs-of-Innocence-world-tour.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+IrishCentral+(IrishCentral))
"You’ll have noticed the album is free to U2.com’ers from the band. It’s also free to everyone on iTunes thanks to Apple. To celebrate the ten year anniversary of our iPod commercial, they bought it as a gift to give to all their music customers. Free, but paid for." (http://www.u2.com/news/title/remember-us)
"But releasing the album free to iTunes subscribers does not mean the band has given the album away. “We were paid,” Bono tells TIME. “I don’t believe in free music. Music is a sacrament.”" (http://time.com/3313164/bono-u2-apple-itunes/)
"“The charts are broken,” he says. The old music industry has reached a low point and hasn’t kept up with the digital world. He wants to see artists’ reach measured by how much they’re listened to, by whatever medium or method." (http://time.com/3313164/bono-u2-apple-itunes/)
Who is Tim Cook?
| Cook in January 2009 after the Macworld Expo |
How was the album given out/ placed on peoples devices?

The album was distributed to every iTunes and iCloud subscriber, being automatically downloaded onto their iOS devices.
"iTunes were now putting it automatically in the music libraries of 500 million customers in 119 countries around the world.
It would be, said Cook, 'the largest album release of all time.'"
"We just finished it last week and thanks to Apple and iTunes it’s with you today. " (http://www.u2.com/news/title/remember-us/)
"Part of the DNA of this band has always been the desire to get our music to as many people as possible. In the next 24 hours, over a half a billion people are going to haveSongs of Innocence…" (http://www.u2.com/news/title/remember-us/)
"You’ll have noticed the album is free to U2.com’ers from the band. It’s also free to everyone on iTunes thanks to Apple" (http://www.u2.com/news/title/remember-us/)
Why are people concerned about this?
People are concerned mainly with the whole privacy, and the fact that apple put something onto their iOS device without the customers consent.
"U2’s decision to team up with Apple to deliver the new album to every iTunes subscriber, unasked, raised valid questions about consumer choice and personal space in a world that routinely infringes on both. Moreover, while Apple paid U2 for the album, critics of the deal suggest this point may have been lost on iTunes customers who got it for free" (http://time.com/3393297/u2-apple-new-digital-format/)
Additional research material
"Forget about the iPhone 6 and the new Apple watch, every iTunes user in the world got a free U2 album Tuesday, as the band performed following CEO Tim Cook's latest product announcements." (Sept. 9)

Report on celebrity gossip talk show called Pop Trigger
"In a move to promote the new iPhone 6, Apple has automatically gifted ALL of their iTunes users a free copy of the latest U2 album, "Songs of Innocence". The effort seems to have backfired, however, with swarms of people taking to social media to express their rage and anger over the free album. Jonah Ray (The Meltdown With Jonah and Kumail, The Nerdist Podcast) joins Pop Trigger to discuss why people are so pissed, whether U2 sucks, and if this was a good move by Apple."

News report on U2 album and how to delete it from your iPhone
"As Tasia Custode reports, Apple is finding out the hard way that free is not always best. But have no fear, you can indeed rid your iPhone of a certain unwanted album.
Following the Apple Event on Tuesday, iPhone users began noticing U2's latest album in its entirety sitting in their iTunes accounts (depending on their settings). While the album can be easily deleted off a desktop, removing it from mobile devices has proven to be quite the task.
For Apple customers that don't have their iTunes account set to automatically download content to their devices, they'll still notice the album, "Songs of Innocence" sitting in their iCloud accounts waiting patiently to be downloaded.
Of course the offer of a free gift would have been nice had it been left up to Apple customers to make the choice to download U2's first album in five years. Many are complaining Apple has breached their privacy by pushing unwanted content directly to all their users."

We decided to have a video conference using google hangout as it's free, we can record it, plus more than one person can talk at a time, screen share, work on documents simultaneously.
The aim of our video conference call was to go over our ideas to see if we were all on the same page, to sort of pick each other brains and see if we could come up with more ideas amongst ourselves.
As this was our first conference call we've had, i reckon it went well, we discussed a few ideas and made sure that we were on the same page.
When we have our next video conference however, we will be more organised as in we will set agendas to talk over, sort of like bullet points which we need to cover, and the conference will be more structured, as in we will go through each point and only talk about it in its allocated time/opportunity, that way it will make it a lot easier to watch back the video and get a clear understanding on what we've got to do.
But for our first video conference it went well, and all of us are happy and know what we've got to do.
