During the adapting process of Gangsta, when looking into the cast and crew, i felt that it wouldn’t fit the series as the channel has not got a history of such a production, also, creating the show for Adult swim i feel would limit the possibilities of how i could adapt it in comparison to choosing another platform such as HBO, which has a history of big production violent crime thriller series. And this i felt would not fit the branding of Adult Swim, as their lowbrow satirical art style, although in some sense it may complement the violence on the series, would also undermine the severity that the series response could get - as audience don’t see Adult swim as a channel that displays serious series, it’s more for comedic, cartoons/anime, and some live action syndicated series.
So for this reason i have chosen HBO and it’s partner, Sky Atlantic, to which, when comparing it to such series as: True Blood, The Wire, Game Of Thrones and Sopranos, i feel will strongly fit the branding of the channel, especially with the cast and crew that i have in mind to work on the series, and these channels would allow the series the exposure it deserves.
The series is going to be a rich list full of new talent mixed in with experienced actors. The same way how Game of Thrones created actors careers whom were unknown before hand, is the same concept when casting certain actors for this series. I felt that using adult swim would limit this possibilities because the channel is not known to produce big budget shows that rivals that what is featured on channels such as: HBO, AMC, Cinemax and FX.
Another benefit of producing the live action adaptation GANGSTA for HBO, is that HBO is renowned for spending big budgets on their shows to make sure they can create the most compelling television series amongst it’s competitors, often gaining praise and awards for their high concept production designs, such as the set created by production designer Bob Shaw for their award winning television series Boardwalk Empire, plus their sets created for Game of Thrones; which see’s the production crew travelling to various locations around the world in order to capture the perfect scene to help sell the series.
So for these reason, this is why i feel that HBO is would be a fitting network for GANGSTA.
