So that i had an idea on the sort of coverage that graffiti video get, i decided to scour the web and see what videos i could find to give myself and my group ideas/inspiration as to what type of shots we can get on our film day.

At the moment, where the content for the VT is still being sourced, and also the branding is still being established, these videos will be used primarly to give us lots of ideas to choose from, so that when it comes to executing our plan, we should hopefully have enough example videos to be able to construct a good VT.

Below is the videos that i found that are useful, which is a mixture of time lapse, reporter led and also mini documentary.

From these videos hopefully we should be able to get some decent ideas from them such as: framing, lens selection, directing, and also different ways in which we could cover the Graffiti scene from both a legal side and also the illegal side, making our VT a more insightful but also impartial one.

So the job role that i was given for Helen Welsh's panel program called "WhatYouSaying?" is a Studio camera operator and also a VT package Camera man

What this job roles will require of me to do is assist my team in producing 4 prerecorded packages of the produces choice (The recorded insert - "occasionally, during a studio production, we may cut away from studio cameras' pictures to show prerecorded material." p.342 Tim Owens Gerald Millerson Television production) to insert into the show - also, to operate one of the four cameras within the studio during the live production, acting as a side camera to Sam Babington who's on the main establishing shot camera.

Even though this is my job role which does not have to be carried out until I'm required to do my job, because my role is minimal, I'm also going to help out where i can and do stuff i feel needs to get done on the producing aspect - where my other class mates may be busy carrying out their work placements or may need help towards completing their task.

Studio production: Job Role

So that The Homecoming audio sounds crisp when the audience is viewing the advert, i contacted my sound engineer/producer friend Aaron Evo Boswell to level out the audio from each clip and eq it so that it sounds the best that it can.

So that he was able to eq the audio for the project, i first sent him over a low quality video of the advert that would be able to playback on Q base (non linear audio editing software) smoothly without taking up much processing. I then rendered out each individual audio channel inside of Adobe Premiere, keeping it aligned with the correct timing, so that he'd be able to mix down each channel. (Kellison, 191:2009)

Solo'd then rendered each individual video audio channel

Once he had all of the audio files EVO imported it into Q-base and aligned it up with the video file

With all of the audio files imported he then equalised the audio

He then applied the FX that he wanted on 3 individual channels

Having the effects on 3 individual channels, he could then select which video audio clip he wanted to send through on a bus to the effects channel.

Once Evo had finished mastering the audio, he then blended together all the separate audio elements into a final mix track - that i was then able to 'marry' to the picture and lock it in.  (Kellison, 193:2009)

Having completed filming and organising all of the footage into its respected folders, i then dragged those folders into Adobe Premier Pro and began to select then edit the footage that i wanted onto the timeline.

Adobe Premiere Pro Timeline

Once i had the footage that i wanted to use on the timeline, i then imported it into after effect into a template that i had purchased.

Adobe After Effects Master Timeline

Grant Dennis Pre-composition

Because the template works by having pre composed compositions ("multiple layers that represent components such as video and audio footage items, animated text and vector graphics, still images, and lights." https://helpx.adobe.com/after-effects/using/composition-basics.html), most of the time consuming work was done, allowing me to insert my footage within the place holders (compositions), plus adjust the project file to how i see fit.

Grant Dennis Pre-composition

Where i filmed some scenes specifically for me to edit, this allowed me to do some match cuts - matching action from one scene, to similar action from another scene allowing me to transition from one scene to another scene. (Harris, 474:2012)

Danny Shannon

Extreme close up to Mid shot of Danny doing bag work; cut quickly so that it looks smooth.

Grant Dennis

Grant does a matching combo on his opponent as he done on the boxing bag.

Because of the limited time i had with the advert, i also made use of multi-framming, in which i had multiple images showing on the screen at once, showing different scenes of the same boxer (Kelison, 186: 2009)

Due to the nature of the project, i edited the majority of the footage using the quick cut editing technique in which the projected combined "fast cuts, jump cuts, montages, and special graphics effects" (Kelison, 184: 2009) to convey the action packed idea of the show.
One complete, i then rendered a rough cut for the promoter to see, just to receive feedback and see if he was ok with everything.

Satisfied with the edit, Joe then asked me about music to which i played to him a track created by my producer friend Kenny Davis called metal gear solid Rapture world.

Happy with the track, he gave me the go ahead to mix the track in with the footage. Having already edited the footage, this just meant making my edits a bit tighter, and matching it to the music.

I then contacted Kenny and asked him to customise the track more making the intro longer and to send me two versions with the ad-libs and without the ad-libs. I also mentioned that i'd need a royalty free licence from him, giving me permission to use the music, plus told him that i'd invoice him for the licence.

So that Kenny could get an idea of how i wanted the intro for the track, i sent him a rough cut bootleg edit of how i wanted it.

After a successful week of shooting, here's the type of shots that i managed to get with brief explanations behind some of the shots.

I also managed to collect dvd's off of the boxers who've had fights as well.

For the shots i set my frame rate to 25fps in order to make my footage look slightly softer and to give it that filmic look (Kelson, 151:2009)

While i was filming i shot sequences of most of the different scenes. Because i was going to be editing the footage, i shot anticipating the editing process because "It is very important to think about the editing process when shooting"(Owens, 186: 2013), "Otherwise, it is possible to end up with a series of shots that do not fit together smoothly." (Owens, 187: 2013)

Medway Park

Establishing shots of Medway park

For this shot i used my 18-75mm zoom lens at 18mm to capture medway park as a wide shot, fitting as much of the picture within the frame as possible in order to capture an establishing shot "also called a master shot, it establishes the scene and what's going on in it." (Kelson, 168,: 2009) "A specific type of extreme long shot used to tell the audience where and when the program takes place." (Harris, 95:2012)
Throughout the Medway Park scene it then cuts to a close up that allows "the viewer to see more details as compared to the long shot of this same scene" (Owens, 158: 2013) providing more contextual information within the image so that the audience understands the subject more clearly (Owens, 178: 2013)

Danny Shannon

I filmed this scene for the edit in order for me to do a match cut "A Type of edit in which a similar action, concept, item, or a combination of these is placed on either side of a cut." (Harris, 474:2012)

Martin Hillman

In order to convey the serious dedicated emotions from the boxers, i filmed some extreme close ups of their face because "By filling the screen with the face, it easily communicates the emotion of the situation. A closeup of an object allows the viewer to understand the detail a bit more" (Owens, 157: 2013)

Ollie Edwards
I filmed some of my shots of the boxers at a low angle looking upwards so that the composition would insinuate that the boxer looks "important, strong, or powerful" (Owens, 164: 2013)

Haidar Sadik

Alongside filming extreme close ups, i also filmed some over the shoulder shots of the trainer doing pad work with the boxers, because "The over the shoulder shot generally presents a more dynamic, interesting, and aesthetically pleasing picture than the flat double-profile two-shot." (Burrows 150: 1998)

Having visited the locations that I'm to film the boxers in during my spare time; where the gyms are local to me, i decided to use this chance to do a location recce. This was done in order to make sure that where I'm filming is safe, but also to make sure that the type of shots that i want to get; i will be able to film within a controlled environment.

Due to the shoot days being short, i've not included any information about places to eat at, as the shoots are only going to be 1hr 30 mins.

Here are the forms below:

For this project the equipment I'm going to be using is: my Sony A7s plus my Canon 50mm f1.8 lens,  17-85mm f4-5.6 lens for wide shots; headphones for monitoring the audio, plus my tripod to get some stable shots of Medway Park;  also my ND Grad filter incase the weather is to sunny when i film Medway Park.
