PROJECT BRIEF
The aim of this unit is to produce a detailed Pre-Production “package” for an original production.
- This choice enables you to work on a large-scale idea that is aimed at competing with what is currently on television.
- You will produce a “package” that communicates your idea to a potential broadcast commissioner – but you will not be actually making the production. Stays at preproduction stage.
- It is hypothetical and it allows you think BIG and not to be constricted by a student sized budget.
- The concept can be anything you want it to be. Drama series, documentary, current affairs, entertainment etc etc
- The package can be made of a variety of elements – Pitch, script, casting, production design, trailer, camera tests, etc etc.
- Should be focused on your own interests.
Project Goals
Because i love to watch japanese Anime and read Mangaka, one of my lifelong goals is to create a good adaptation of a variety of Anime series that i watch and Mangaka series that i read.
Various production companies have attempted to adapt Shounen mangaka's and Anime's either into a live acion movie or tv series, most of the time failing miserably, ruining the integrity of the series and only appropriating what they deem fit, totally messing up the original storyline of popular Mangaka series, and leaving the fans angry.
So with this project, i want to take that opportunity to adapt a Mangaka series that i enjoy reading and watching, turning it into a live action production that could potentially be picked up by a broadcasting channel, keeping the integrity of the storyline but maybe appropriating the stories setting and characters into a more modern environment, as it may be hard to recreate on screen live that of what an animation could do whilst keeping within a reasonable budget.
In order for me to get started on what i want to do, i have created a task list of things i need to find out to help me prepare my Pre-production package:
- What Mangaka do i want to Adapt?
- Show example of Anime and manga
- Description of the series
- Main Character analysis
- Plot + synopsis
- Basically an overview introduction to the series, outlining the 5 W's
- Examples of live action adaptations of various Manga's
- Show big budget Adaptations by film companies
- Show indie budget by indie producers / small productions companies
- (This is to show the what may be capable)
- Research What channel i would like to produce the Mangaka series with:
- Shows they have already
- Comissioning process
- Scheduling of similar genre programs
