Today when i visited the apprentice workshop, another contributor whom i originally casted, Scott Wiseman, was working.
What today consisted of was mainly filming sequence shots (when possible) of Scott, Mirella and Steve working and giving feedback to each other, and also of individual shots of them working, whilst getting occasional visits from one another other to each others workstation.
Whilst working i learnt quite a lot from a technical perspective on how certain shots work with the selection of lenses that i'm using, one particular shot was a close up that i tried to get of steve working. Because i was using a shallow depth of field to allow a lot of light in, and the lens was not a macro lens, when i tried to get a close up shot of steve chipping away the stone, only a small area of the shot was in focus. If i were to close up my aperture so that i had a narrow depth of field, i would also loose a lot of light on the shot, and where i'm working in an actuality driven environment i wouldn't have enough time to set up a proper lighting kit, luckily i had my LED lights on me which i set one up behind the piece i was trying to film to light up the background, and then used my 2nd light to light up the foreground a bit to compensate for the loss of light due to me going from f1.8 to f11, however this made my focal length wider which allowed for the shot to be more in focus.
However!!! after doing all of that i realised that there was an emergency exit door behind me (IDIOT!!) so i opened up the door and let in a lot of light.
This worked out better and more convenient because the way how i lit the shot, i would of had to of set up a tripod to hold the LED light for the foreground, and diffuse it because the light was to harsh on the stone, causing too much shadows, but i still used the other LED light as a backlit to even out the contrast of the shot.

I also done test shots of them playing cards at lunchtime, to get practice in doing a shot with more than 2 actors in there, to prepare myself for tomorrows shoot where i'll film them again playing cards.
The main reason for this test shoot was to see if i was able to remember which way each characters line was and provide coverage without crossing their line, whilst trying to get as much coverage as possible.
So overall, todays shoot was successful, i got a lot of coverage of the apprentices working which should be helpful to me during the edit! However, in order for me to of gotten these shots, i had to wait around for a while and film when i thought appropriate to get what i needed.
