Having completed my script, i then had an idea on how i wanted the narrative for this portrait to progress more clearly, which helped me to structure my questions in a logical order that would not only get my answers in a chronological order, but also help Oli delve further into his past experiences as a child growing up, as each of the questions covers a progressive timeline throughout his journey from childhood to a professional boxer.
When i was structuring my questions, i structured the themes of each point of the interview questions as, happy and blissful, tragedy, emotional / sadness, resolution / ray of light, path towards success, happiness and atonement. I done this because, having researched into the story, when Oli is telling his story, these are the moods that the audience would feel as they hear his story.
Because during the pre-interview Oli was reluctant at times and not clear on some of his answers, i’ve included variations of the same question phrased differently, to hopefully help illicit some useful answers out of Oli.
Also, to help guide me through the interview to know what questions I’m asking, i sectioned off each narrative turning point into it’s own section of questions, for example:
Child hood - Covering his upbringing
Robbery situation - The story of when he got robbed and how it impacted upon his life
Bullying situation - How as a result of being robbed it led to constant bullying
Starting a fresh new life through training - Oli starting up training to build confidence
Amateur Boxing life - Why he started amateur boxing and how did he do
Pro questions - Why did he turn pro, and how is life different as a pro fighter
Pro debut questions / Relationship and personal struggle - How did his relationship struggle almost cost him his pro career before it started
Final wrapping up questions- How has boxing changed your life and how grateful are you for boxing
