Overall feedback about whole expierience

This whole task took me way longer than i had expected (1 week) , as it involved me listening to the clips on multiple occasions and trying to structure the interview into a narrative structure that has a logical order. Because the interview was over 2 hours long, i had to cut down the interview, getting rid of a lot of footage and pulling out the most compelling stories from the interview that would keep the audience interested. This meant that i had to change up the story that i had planned on my script earlier completely, removing the story about Oli’s break up and his training, and cutting it into a narrative that focuses solely on Oli changing his life around due to training, and the fulfilment, acceptance and success he gained from pursuing the life of a professional fighter and how this has changed his life.

The problem with this is that, during the interview, even though i kind of had this narrative structure in mind, i went about it in a long winded way, as the questions that i asked him was not narrowed down to this specific structure. The questions i asked him covered various areas of his life and experiences that i needn’t have asked as i didn’t end up using them in the end, and could of done with asking rather specific questions to do with his life as a professional fighter and his pro debut, plus how he feels about fighting. However, it’s all part of a learning experience and luckily enough, i have enough material to try and chop together in the sync pull to put together an ok story.

The edit

Once logged, dragged in and synced, i began to edit out the interviews into a story. Due to not having time and being the only one on the edit, i didn’t do a paper edit, as i pretty much remembered the key parts in the interview, having spent so long constructing the questions. So before i started the edit, i already knew what parts of the interview i wanted in the timeline.

Logging footage

So that i could keep a structured work space, i created coloured labels for the markers and also for the clips that let’s me easily navigate through the project file, so i’m able to identify what questions were being asked, alongside noting whether or not the questions were good, making notes / comments on the markers about the answers of the questions to help me quickly remember what the clip is about. The good thing with this is that, when i mouse over the markers, it quickly shows the comments so that i can work efficiently.

Once i’d dragged in and synced all the footage up, labelling the questions on the timeline, i then created a 2nd timeline, dragging the relevant clips into it that i wanted for the story.

GV’s Cut aways

For my GV’s, the ones where i had external audio used on the days of the shoot, i created separate timelines with just the sequences and the specific audio on there, syncing the audio and footage together. Because my shoots were actuality where i couldn’t control the environment, i couldn’t use a clapper board, so i had to either sync by ear or sync by eye; looking at the wave form patterns and matching them together.

Once i finished editing down my sync pull, i found that i had made 6 chopped down selections of the sync pull, backing up each one as i chopped them down into the final one that i was happy with the story.

Conclusion

Having finalised my sync pull down, i’m now going to create a sync assembly out of my interview footage, dragging and editing in the footage that i filmed earlier on throughout the project, so that i can start shaping together this portrait.
